ARCHES – Augmented Reality for Cultural HEritage monitoring and conServation

TS3 - Communities’ resilience to risks: social, economic, legal and cultural dimensions

Description and objective

The project “Augmented Reality for Cultural HEritage monitoring and conServation – ARCHES”, which falls under thematic area RT3 “Systems for multi-risk management of cultural heritage and community engagement”, proposes the prototypal development of a digital information system integrated into a platform that supports decision-making in the management of historical assets or monuments, combined with augmented reality (AR) techniques for monitoring and maintenance.

The objectives of ARCHES can be summarized as follows:

  • contribute to the definition of a digital, integrated, and updatable management system;
  • digitalize the system using risk parameters based on digital survey analyses;
  • develop a protocol for visual inspections employing Augmented Reality (AR) to optimize the planning and implementation of maintenance and risk mitigation activities.

This system, relying on the integration of advanced expertise in the fields of structural monitoring, infrastructure resilience assessment, and ICT system management, will ensure the following functional workflow:

  • Digitalization of the historical asset;
  • Digital mapping of deterioration phenomena;
  • Development of an Early-Warning System (EWS);
  • Augmented Reality (AR) visualization of degradation and EWS data.
