HISTORIAN – HIgh-resolution Sedimentary daTa fOR paleoclImAte recoNstruction

SPOKE DS8 - Science underpinning climate services for risk mitigation and adaptation

Description and objectives

HISTORIAN aims to provide the scientific community and stakeholders with the most comprehensive collection of historical and paleoclimatic data, essential for assessing current climatological trends and their consequences in terms of sea temperature variations and sea-level rise.

The project is structured around three main objectives:

  • OBJECTIVE 1:
Collection of data available in the scientific literature concerning Italian marine areas, focusing on the period between the Holocene Thermal Maximum (HTM, last 6,000 years) and the present day, with particular attention to the past 2,000 years in order to investigate anthropogenic impacts.
  • OBJECTIVE 2:
Extraction of data usable as proxies for reconstructing variations in sea surface temperature and sea-level changes, aimed at validating and standardizing observations related to the evolution of the marine environment.
  • OBJECTIVE 3:
Creation of an updated, open-access database systematically compiling information on the marine environment along the Italian coasts, to enable a comprehensive reconstruction of temporal variations and long-term trends.
