TS2 - Urban and Metropolitan Settlements
Description and objectives
The SUNRISE Project aims to address the two main objectives of Thematic Area 5 within BAC RETURN SPOKE 5 – TS1:
The creation of a thematic database collecting the results of experimental campaigns on the effectiveness of different types of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), making them accessible (according to Open Science protocols) to the Extended Partnership;
The definition of operational guidelines and effectiveness indicators for strategies aimed at mitigating the impacts of climate change at the urban scale.
Through the SUNRISE Project, which involves 10 Italian universities, several NbS will be investigated to assess their effectiveness in urban stormwater management and in enhancing resilience to climate change impacts.
To achieve these goals, both experimental activities—focused on analyzing the hydrological efficiency of existing NbS and evaluating the hydraulic properties of materials used in their design—and modeling activities will be carried out. The latter will include hydrodynamic modeling, the use of optimization algorithms, and simplified procedures to test the efficiency of such solutions, considering two case studies in different urban and climatic contexts.
The results of these research activities will contribute to the development of the thematic database and the definition of operational guidelines.
