COAST-CLIM – Creation, validation, and systematisation of an open-access data base of observations and scenarios describing the evolution of the sea environment and wave climate

SPOKE DS8 - Science underpinning climate services for risk mitigation and adaptation

Description and objectives

The project aims to produce and provide a high-resolution modeling database of both historical and future scenario data concerning sea level and wind-generated waves along the Italian coasts.

To achieve this, state-of-the-art numerical models will be used, benefiting from: the coupling between wave and hydrodynamic components, assimilation of observational data, and atmospheric forcing at a resolution suitable for reproducing both the climatology and extreme meteo-marine events in the Mediterranean Sea.

The COAST-CLIM project is designed to achieve the following objectives:

  • Objective 1: Production of a high-resolution dataset of historical reconstructions of sea level and waves along the Italian coasts using a coupled wave-current model.
  • Objective 2: Production of a high-resolution dataset of historical reconstructions and future climate projections of waves along the Italian coasts of the Adriatic Sea.
  • Objective 3: Export and publication of results on open-access platforms, provided as regular grid fields and/or time series along the Italian coasts.
