Floodnodes – Simplified large scale hydrologic, hydraulic and geomorphic modelling for identifying flood hot spots

SPOKE VS1 - Water

Description and objectives

The project has the following objectives:

  • Conceptual development of an integrated procedure based on morphological and one-dimensional hydraulic data for the identification, on a national scale, of hydraulically critical cross-sections (resulting from both natural morphological causes and anthropogenic structures in the riverbed) for flood events with an assigned return period
  • The procedure must be flexible and adaptable to the different district/regional contexts of the national territory, i.e. to digital terrain models of different resolutions, to the different hydrological information already available for estimating flood flows/pulls, and to the different information available on hydraulic works (weirs, crossbars) and road infrastructure (bridges) present along the network
  • Where necessary, the procedure must allow for the inclusion of wood transport during flood events, enabling the operator to assign characteristic values for the length and diameter of logs that can be carried by the current, together with all hydrological, hydraulic and geometric information that cannot be automatically obtained from the information already available for a given river basin
  • The GIS-based tool implementing the procedure must be usable in “stand-alone” mode, i.e. it must not be tied to the use of specific proprietary software
