Water Management Strategies and Climate Change Adaptation in Southern Italy

SPOKE VS1 - Water

Description and objectives

The project has the following objectives:

Assessment and forecasting, within the administrative area of competence of the Southern Apennines and Sicily Basin Authority:

  • of intra- and inter-annual variability in hydrological parameters capable of describing drought and low water phenomena
of potential repercussions on water system implementation and management policies, including the degree of interconnection optimisation of resource use, provision of alternative supplies in emergency conditions, and the ability to develop procedures for adapting to critical scenarios

Objectives:

  • Definition of a hydrological database for southern Italy and statistical pre-processing
  • Development of seasonal forecasts at district level with adequate spatial resolution for hydrological applications
  • Downscaling and bias correction of climate scenarios at spatial scales suitable for hydrological applications
  • Validation and selection of climate scenarios
  • Hydrological modelling based on selected scenarios
  • Large-scale water resource management and optimisation scenarios at relevant pilot scales
  • Assessment of the impact of climate change on water resources in agriculture
  • Identify and evaluate management options to address water crises at different planning time horizons
