Domenico Calcaterra, Scientific Director of the RETURN Foundation, emphasized the importance of ensuring the stability and security of territorial systems through risk prevention and management, in order to protect economic and social progress. His remarks were made during the panel “Circular Economy, Sustainability That Drives Growth,” part of the Adnkronos QeA event “Sustainability at a Crossroads,” held in Rome.
LinkClimate Change Risks: The OGS Project
In Lignano Sabbiadoro, as part of the RETURN project funded by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), a simulation of multi-risk scenarios related to climate change — such as storm surges and tsunamis — was carried out. The goal is to develop new strategies for prevention and integrated risk management, moving beyond a sector-based approach. The project involves dozens of partners, including OGS and the University of Genoa, and will produce thousands of scientific publications across Italy. The lead institution is the University of Naples.
LinkAdnkronos – The RETURN Foundation presents the ‘PhD Autumn School in Security, Risk and Vulnerability
The former Annunziata Convent in Sestri Levante is hosting the “PhD Autumn School in Security, Risk and Vulnerability – Insights from the RETURN Project,” an initiative funded by the extended partnership RETURN. The event is organized in collaboration with the University of Genoa and is aimed at PhD students and early-career researchers working on seismic and flood risk in urban systems who wish to broaden their perspective through a multi-risk approach.
LinkAnsa – The Return Academy is back
The Return Academy mission is to train the seismic and environmental risks managers.

LinkScienza in Rete – Flood Risk: Estimating the Value of Cultural Heritage
There are three dimensions of risk: dangerousness, vulnerability and exposure. The first concerns purely physical aspects, the second concerns the ability of assets to suffer damage, the third is related to the value attributed. A recent study estimated the value attributed by citizens to places and monuments in Florence to improve flood risk management from the point of view of the exposure of cultural assets. Are churches or museums worth more? Unesco heritage sites or lesser-known sites? We discuss this with Fabio Castelli, full professor of Hydraulic and Maritime Construction and Hydrology at the University of Florence and member of the Return project.
LinkRai News – Futuro24: RETURN, together for a more resilient Italy
Strengthening the ability to predict, monitor and deal with natural disasters, with particular attention to climate change: this is the goal of a large project funded by the PNRR and coordinated by the Federico II University of Naples.

Promoted by the Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS) as part of the Return project, funded by the PNRR, the event covers topics such as multi-risk analysis, integrated emergency management, applied resilience, and risk communication, with the aim of strengthening communities' capacity to face growing environmental hazards. A recent study estimated the value attributed by citizens to places and monuments in Florence to improve flood risk management from the point of view of the exposure of cultural assets.
